We are back in business, though three days of high winds made things a little hard. But we keep doing the halter and lead deal, giving feet, carrying blankets (if the winds allows) - all works just fine.

Little Ellie is getting pretty independend. Out in the pasture she might be a long ways away from mama – still keeping an eye on her. And at feeding she clains her own hay pile – she gets the fines that are always left in the wheel barrow. And with a little help from me the other guys leave her alone.

Well, same old leading with and without halter, picking up feet, wearing blankets – stupid in the heat. And since it is getting hot any shade helps – so now Ellie is wearing a hat – kind of sort of.

She probably is the most loving filly I ever worked with. It seems like the more the mares and the stud practice the better they get.

I am not sure if I want to be a hat rack.

And we added blankets – well actually towels, but it does not matter much to her. Nothing really seems to matter to this little filly. Once we find a day without wind we will start wearing a hat – like a real cowhorse.

Now that it is warm I get a blanket.

Ellie is getting adicted to the halter. Well, not really the halter but the scratching that comes with it. That always works just fine – she really wants to have the halter on.

And the little girls “leads” just fine – without a halter or lead rope. Where ever I go she will follow me – well, the gate is the end for her.

We also made a little private deal. When I am feeding, she gets the fines left in the wheel barrow in her own little pile. I never can figure out why foals start chewing the stems first.

Gonna play some more?

We continued to work with ropes and the halter and made pretty nice progress. But this week had two real highlights.

On Wednesday I had groomed the whole gang and when I wanted to start with Ellie, she had just laid down. I got down on my knees to just scratch her a little. She first was thinking about getting up but then just rolled over with her head in my lap and enjoyed a LONG belly scratching. Guess she trusts me.

On Saturday – after the “serious work” I just played with her. I ran off – and she followed me running (new way I am trying for kind of free style leading). When I quit she took off on her own full blast (I thought) down to the bottom fence (about 1/8 mile), turned, grabbed another gear and came flying up the hill. She had to pay attention to scrubs and prairie dog holes and when she got back to the gate – she had another hear left. Then she just went on a dead stop and looked at me like, “THIS is running”.

Are we done? I need a drink.

As always, the first day - Monday 5 – 3 – 10 – belongs to mama. Tuesday we had some visitors – so she learns that there are more of these two legged ones. Also a full scratching – and she had no problem, giving her feet.

Wednesday we went from scratching to the curry comb – worked fine. In the evening she found out that she can run – and can she run. Made my hair stand up – but she has great breaks, too. Thursday we started playing with the figure 8 rope and on Friday she was “leading” with it.

Saturday we were “leading”, giving feet and sure more scratching – and today will be her “day off”.

Morgan horses are used in pretty mucg every discipline – be it hunter / jumper, dressage, driving or genral showing. And they usually are doing very good in all disciplines.

But the “Western Working” Morgans have one specialty – cow work. The first Morgan mare I got had beeing used mainly for driving and some trail riding. When I first started working cows on her she was just pertified by these things she had never seen before.

But it did not take her long to find out that cows really did not eat horses. And after that she turned into one of the best cow horses I ever rode. She could “read” cows – and always stayed ahead of them.
